Reported speech is the way of reporting what someone said without using their exact words. It usually involves changes in pronouns, tense, time expressions, and place words.
Subjective (Subject) Pronouns
I, We, You, He, She, It, They
Objective (Object) Pronouns
Me, Us, You, Him, Her, It, Them
Examples of Reported Speech with Subjective & Objective Pronouns
Direct: Ram said, “I am helping her.”
Reported: Ram said that he was helping her.
(I → he = subject pronoun, her = object pronoun)
Direct: Sita said, “They will call me.”
Reported: Sita said that they would call her.
(they = subject, her = object)
Direct: The teacher said, “You must complete your work.”
Reported: The teacher told the students that they had to complete their work.
(they = subject)
Direct: He said, “We are waiting for them.”
Reported: He said that they were waiting for them.
(they = subject, them = object)
Direct: Maya said to me, “I will help you.”
Reported: Maya told me that she would help me.
(she = subject, me = object)
Key Rule
Subject pronouns do the action (he, she, they).
Object pronouns receive the action (him, her, them, me).
