Export up to 22 million of coal with different qualities/shippers from Raglan Creek (Queensland) affected by draft restriction, narrow channel and five meters tide gauge, in a National Heritage area and offshore transhipment site within Greet Barrier Reef Marine Park (UNESCO).
The Challenge:
An efficient supply chain and environmental protection: how to have both? Logmarin Advisors carried out river and maritime supply chain feasibility study, devising and designing a tailored coal supply chain solution to meet Mitchell Group targets.
Logmarin's contribution included: the dynamic computer simulation (Log.Des) of the coal supply chain (mine production, railway, storage facility, river terminal, barging, transhipment and export vessel), assistance for Environmental Impact Assessment, mooring study, conceptual design of the shore terminal, dredging impact, traffic and commodities flow analysis, operational and risk analysis, preliminary economic evaluation (Capex, Opex, ocean and coastal freights ) and environmental safeguards.
Considering the operational patterns and environmental restrictions, articulated tug and barge (AT/B) and a catamaran floating terminal (named Capricorn CAT) have resulted the most efficient logistics solution. The entire supply has been designed to protect local fauna, flora and waters, preventing spillage and pollution, and it was, based on safety and reliability standards.
In order to move a first step towards an even more consolidated environmental commitment, Mitchell Group and Logmarin are promoting, together with RINA (IACS founder Classification Society), the development of a specific Green Class Notation.
