The narrator has an intense emotional attachment to this girl but to her she doesn’t see it as a long term deal. She inevitability breaks off the relationship and leaves the narrator heartbroken, even though he never saw the relationship lasting. After time has passed, the wound never fully heals and he tries to avoid the any memory of the relationship at all costs, never bringing it up in conversation to spare himself the pain.
