Are you superstitious to the point of feeling like you need to do certain things over and over again because you are convinced this will keep your loved ones safe?
In this video, I delve into magical thinking OCD, a subtype of OCD characterized by excessive superstitions and magical thinking. I explain how superstitions are harmless until they lead to mental compulsions and compulsive behaviours. I also discuss common examples and underlying drivers of magical thinking in OCD, such as inflated responsibility, the need for certainty, and guilt.
Finally, I share my top three tips to help manage this type of OCD: deflating the responsibility balloon and increasing comfort with uncertainty. I also discuss magical thinking OCD treatment, in particular, exposure and response prevention (ERP).
