Day 1. Nov 19, 2018. In-patient treatment at Toa Payoh Vets
This case of pyometra (womb infection) in a female dog is a common surgical condition. This is a veterinary educational video for dog owners to advise them to spay the female dog when she is young, to prevent pyometra in older age. There is no gory surgical procedures.
Spay your female dog when she is younger to prevent pyometra (pus inside the uterus). In this case, abdominal palpation - no bladder stone or abdominal tumour. Dog has pyometra as evident by more purulent vaginal discharge as an in-patient. IV drips and medication now.
Removal of the infected uterus should be done within the next few days if the owner agrees. In some cases, the infection goes away completely after a course of antibiotics but recur some 5-6 months later with the dog not eating again.
Remember to spay your dog at around 6-12 months to prevent pyometra and emotional stress and higher financial costs of operating a pyometra dog as compared to spaying a normal dog as it takes a much longer time and is more risky to operate on pyometra dogs.
