Join Fatty Uncle as we explore "Talat Noi" (or "Talad Kia"), one of the oldest and most authentic Chinese communities in Thailand.
Back in the day, this was a bustling commercial hub, with streets as crowded and vibrant as Hong Kong! Today, we're diving deep into this historic neighborhood to hunt for legendary, old-school Chinese dishes—some with recipes that are over 100 years old!
Featured in this episode:
Ped Toon Chao Tha: A 50-year-old legend famous for its braised duck. They use a specific type of duck ("Ped Poiy Chai") known for its tender meat, thin skin, and low fat. The five-spice broth is fragrant with Chinese herbs, offering a perfectly balanced, savory, and mellow flavor.
Chui Kueh Talat Noi (100 Years Old): This shop still uses ancient methods to make their steamed rice cakes. The soft, freshly steamed cakes are topped with a savory mixture of preserved radish and shiitake mushrooms, slow-roasted over a charcoal fire for an incredible aroma. A splash of their spicy and sour chili vinegar sauce cuts through the richness perfectly.
Hakka Noodles Si Phraya: This spot makes five different kinds of Hakka-style fish and pork balls, all handmade fresh daily. They have an amazing springy, chewy texture. For the most authentic experience, you have to order the "Sen Mee Nam Sai"—rice vermicelli in a clear broth with their signature meatballs.
Krua Je Ngor: A famous Thai-Chinese seafood restaurant known for its viral dish, "Stir-Fried Water Mimosa Noodles" (Mee Pad Kached). But we're here for a secret menu item: Je Ngor's "Vegetarian Buns" (Salapao Je), the very dish that first made her famous but is lesser-known to the younger generation.
This is more than just a food tour; it's a journey back in time. Let's eat!
