To pronounce the sound U in French, imagine you would throw out of your mouth a needle.
The sound U in French is not so difficult, but it requires a bit of training. Be patient, just a bit more "u" each time. And you'll get it.
Be careful, the letter U in French can be combined with other letters to represent another sound :
"un" or "um" = "in"
but... "um" can also be pronounced "om" (maximum, rhum)
And if there is a vowel after the M, or the N, the "U" goes back to its "alone pronunciation). So in those words you must pronounce like in the vidéo :
u - n'
u' - m
Lune (moon) - Dune -
Rhume - Humus (the s is not a silent letter here).
"ou" is almost like the English "oo", but in the throat, the tongue is going back side. (the "oo" is more or less between the French sound "u" and "ou". )
"ui" / "uy" : pronounced one letter after another, it's really U - I , but pronounced very fast, it's a diphtongue, as fast as if it was one letter.
After the Q or the G, it's usually not pronounced :
"qui" = ki (who / that / which)
guitare (here the "g" is pronounced like in English in guitar)
If you see the "accent circonflexe" on the "u", you must pronounce it like in the video: sûr (sure), dû (had to), piqûre (sting, injection)
Sometimes the "u" is pronounced like "w": aquatique, pronounced "akwatik".
In Latin there was only one letter "v", it was something in between "v", "w", French "ou", French "u")
"eu": can be a closed or open sound.
Usually, if the syllable ends with a consonant sound, the "eu" is open :
fleuR, jeuNe, œuF.
If the syllable ends with the vowel sound, the "eu" is closed :
jeu, feu, peu.
Be careful, that rule follow what you hear, not what is written. If it's a silent consonant, you don't hear the consonant, so the "EU" is closed :
deux - œufs - euh - peut
There are also regional differences.
Notice that the name of the letter "Q" is "KU".
Sometimes in foreign words, the letter "U" is pronounced like
"ou" : UD (can also be written "oud")
open "eu" (like in "fleur" , "flower") : FUN, MUG
