“Change happens because of our personal choices and we all have to pay a price for the choices we make”. This is the most important lesson which Risham Waseem, a human rights activist from Pakistan has learned during her 20 years of experience. In the talk, Risham explores her journey of becoming an activist, from playing a rape victim in a play at the age of 11 to creating her own web platform that advocates for the rights of women, youth and religious minorities. She delves into personal narratives, societal complexities, and the power of collective empowerment and shares how she hopes to continue her work at a time when the world is becoming increasingly complex and divisive. Risham Waseem is a digital storyteller, media trainer and communication and advocacy strategist based in Lahore, Pakistan. She is the director of Maati TV( www.maatitv.com),Pakistan’s first web TV dedicated towards creating advocacy and awareness on Climate Justice, Gender Justice, Equal Citizenship and Cultural Diversity.
As the director of Maati TV, she has created over 300 digital stories on various human rights issues and has trained over 3000 individuals in citizen journalism and social media advocacy.
She has been the recipient of both Chevening South Asian Journalism fellowship and the Hurford Youth Fellowship. She is interested in understanding the global trends of the information industry, how it will impact the existing models of media and journalism and what new spaces can be created. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
