This special update recognizes the 180th anniversary of the seminal report by John Scott Russell in 1844, on his study of solitary waves.
Ten years prior, while observing canal transport, the Scottish engineer and naval architect had made the first documented observation of a solitary wave: A wave that appeared and travelled unchanged, keeping its shape above the surface. Russell followed it on horseback as long as he could.
Intrigued by his observation and persevering despite others' scepticism, Russell successfully replicated solitary waves and published his landmark analysis in 1844.
,
Mathematical solutions of solitary waves were developed decades later, ushering in eventual recognition, more than a century after that of the electromagnetic forms of these self-sustaining entities, which have dual wave-particle properties and now referred to as solitons.
On this channel and at the Center for the Study of Oceanic Optical Solitons, we strive to bring about recognition of previously unknown, remarkable visual phenomena which relate to Russell's discovery nearly two centuries ago.
Which is, that the effects of coastal underwater turbulence and water solitons, in this instance generated through tidal forces and coastal geography, do not end at the 'water's edge'.
Rather, that these effects surprisingly continue to manifest through the generation of local nonlinear fields, creating coastal environments conducive for self-trapping of ambient light and producing unique optical solitons, which constitute ALAV phenomena.
The result is previously unknown forms of luminous UAP in harbor areas, having unique, highly localized space-time signatures and demonstrating complex patterns of organization and interaction, distinct from but also sharing characteristics with atmospheric UAP and other luminous phenomena.
,
In recognition of Russell's invaluable contribution to soliton science, as a special update we post here the full ALAV Introductory Film. It provides over an hour of original, curated video of the phenomena, dating back to their original recognition, interspersed with interpretations and analyses provided in a slideshow format.
Viewing the film on full screen is helpful. Viewers may wish to watch the film in segments, and move between sections of interest, which begin at the following points as follows:
Part 1 - 1:53 Observations and Visual Explanation (1 hour of film examples with discussions; includes information on coastal locations of the phenomena, at 33:00)
Part 2 - 59:51 ALAV Visual Analysis and Interpretation (presentation of the Soliton conclusion)
Part 3 - 1:21:57 ALAV Observations and UAP Considerations (comparison of ALAV and other UAP)
