Rare earths, auto chips top agenda in German FM Wadephul's delayed China visit; One-China reiterated

Описание: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul began his two-day visit to China on Monday amid a flurry of recent China travel made by European leaders.

The Chinese side told the German diplomat that China and Germany are important economic and trading partners which can achieve win-win results through mutually beneficial cooperation.

Beijing meanwhile noted that the purpose of Wadephul's delayed China visit should be to seek cooperation and enhance understanding, not to amplify differences, urging Germany to play "a positive role in promoting healthy and stable development" of China-EU relations.

China's deliveries of rare earths, semiconductors and other commodities to Germany dominated the talks.

China retaliated with export control measures after the Netherlands intervened in the Chinese-owned, Dutch-headquartered chipmaker Nexperia in September, a move that triggered a supply chain shock in the global automotive industry.

China's commerce ministry announced last month that it would grant short term special licenses to allow exports of certain Nexperia products, as the Netherlands is softening its stance following weeks of tension.

China has meanwhile urged the EU to press the Dutch government to lift restrictions on Nexperia.

Wadephul said Berlin would "firmly adhere to the one-China policy" during his meeting with Chinese side.

The visit is expected to pave the way for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first trip to China early next year.

Wadephul's first trip to China came six weeks after his delayed visit, which had been postponed due to a lack of "confirmed meetings" with key Chinese leaders due to his repeated provocative remarks about China.
