As this film of the carnival shows, there are traditional floats, including a confetti canon and a most impressive life-size steam locomotive, but the majority of the participants in Lucerne’s “Fat Monday” Parade are on foot and wearing masks – some of them quite gruesome and possibly frightening for small children!
For this is a carnival held the day before Shrove Tuesday, using music and dance to blow away the spirits of winter. Many in the parade are wearing bizarre costumes, and represent monsters of the cold, dark season, some of them much larger than life-size, and some wearing skulls and other emblems of death. The sound track is provided by marching brass bands and drumming bands, with weird ghostly noises accompanying some floats, and the hubbub of chatter from the watching crowds in the background.
