Review of the stunning Goldring Eroica LX / H Moving Coil Cartridge. The Goldring Eroica is a very special cartridge. It’s a moving coil that comes in both a low output and high output version. The output on the high is 2.5mv and the low is 0.5mv. This gives you a choice depending on the gain of your phono preamp. In general if you have a superior MC phono preamp, you can get slightly better sound out of the LX, however if you don’t have a great MC phono preamp, the cost and sound combination of the H with an MM phono preamp will be better overall due to the lower amplification factor.

The sound of the Eroica is simply beautiful. I use the word beautiful on purpose because it encapsulates the feelings of warmth, naturalness, purity and honesty. Fittingly, “Eroica” in Italian means the feminine of “Heroic”.

This is not an analytical cartridge yet it offers a completely balanced, organic accuracy where all frequencies simply fall into place and coexist perfectly. Unlike just about all other cartridges, this is a cartridge that simply plays the music and cannot be bound by crude labels such as bright or dull or punchy or soft because nothing is wrong with this cartridge. Nothing stands out as an error. All elements of the sound are cohesively integrated just how it should be. It’s a beautiful and heroic sound.

Tracking and soundstage are excellent as well, offering an enveloping sound field which, in tandem with the perfect tonality, draws you into the the music unlike most cartridges even costing 2-3 times as much. We cannot recommend this cartridge highly enough. It is an absolute stunning bargain even for those used to megabucks cartridges.
