Most people practice naam jap by counting on a mala or a counter, but the essence of naam jap is not counting, it is remembrance. A deeper way to practice is to merge the name of the divine with your own breath. Sit comfortably and begin by simply noticing your breathing without trying to control it. As awareness settles, gently take the name of your chosen form of the divine on every exhale. Let the inhale happen naturally and allow the exhale to carry the naam softly within. In this way, the breath becomes the mala and awareness becomes the counter. When naam jap is synchronized with the breath, it automatically turns into meditation. The mind stays anchored, thoughts lose their grip, and remembrance flows effortlessly. Over time, the name begins to repeat itself without force, and meditation deepens without struggle. This practice unites bhakti and dhyana, devotion and awareness, into one continuous experience. Naam jap on the breath is not something you do, it is something you become.
