Supreme Court On ECI | SC's Interim Order On Bihar SIR: Disclose Deleted Voters

Описание: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued an interim order directing the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publish the names of all 65 lakh voters who have been removed from the electoral rolls in Bihar, along with the reasons for their deletion. The court said the list must be uploaded on the websites of all District Electoral Officers and made searchable by EPIC number. In addition to online access, the same information must also be displayed manually at block offices, Panchayat Bhawans, and booth-level offices across the state.

The bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, emphasised that the process must be transparent and accessible. “If 22 lakh people have been found dead, why should their names not be disclosed at the booth level?” Justice Kant asked. “We do not want citizens' rights to be dependent on political parties.”

The court further stated that the names of those deleted from the list—whether due to death, migration, or duplication—must be publicly available at the local level to allow residents to verify entries. Justice Dipankar Datta remarked that there had clearly been a departure from past procedures and said the exercise must not be conducted in a manner that places an undue burden on the average citizen.
