OKOTOKS, AB (November 25, 2023) — Playing against his hometown team, Rylan Brown (Sherwood Park, AB) tallied the overtime winner in highlight-reel fashion as the Okotoks Oilers defeated the Sherwood Park Crusaders by a 5–4 score on Saturday night.
Brown netted his fifth goal of the season just 41 seconds into the extra frame, receiving an audacious saucer pass from second-year forward Hunter Sawka (Cochrane, AB) and deking past Crusaders goaltender Erick Roest to clinch the Oilers' fifth consecutive win.
It took a two-goal rally in the third period for the Crusaders to even push the game to overtime, with Diego Johnson tucking a wraparound past Alex Scheiwiller to make it 4–3 just 3:34 into the third before Ryder Ringor evened the score off a cross-crease past from Noah Wills with 7:51 to play in regulation time.
For much of Saturday's game, it appeared the Oilers would skate away with two points without much trouble. They led 3–2 after 20 minutes of play and 4–2 after 40, but they needed extra time to seal the deal after Sherwood Park scored twice on seven shots in the third period.
Oilers affiliate Carson Wright (Calgary, AB) opened the scoring with his first AJHL goal just over three minutes into the game, converting from close range off a nice feed from Sam Huck (Calgary, AB). And after Cole Barrett evened the score for the Crusaders less than a minute later, the Oilers responded by rattling off two goals just over three minutes apart — the first off a quick one-timer by Sawka; the second, a gorgeous snipe by Kade Duell (Taber, AB).
Cade Christenson made it 3–2 with 96 seconds to play before the first intermission, but Jack Silverberg restored the Oilers' two-goal lead at the 6:57 mark of the middle frame after a chaotic series of events. After being denied by Roest on a wraparound attempt, Silverberg had his stick whacked out of his hands by a Crusaders defender. It flew high in the air and ricocheted off the netting before coming to rest at Silverberg's feet. The 2004-born forward picked up his stick just in time to receive the puck from Huck, and he deflected it past Roest to make it 4–2 Oilers.
After Johnson and Ringor scored in the third to force overtime, the Oilers put their stamp on the game in the extra frame. They took the only two shots of the three-on-three period, with Brown registering his first game-winning goal as an Oiler (although he did score a shootout winner against the Canmore Eagles back on September 16).
