Mandela cuts jail terms on election anniversary
As South Africans on Thursday (27/4) celebrated the first anniversary of free elections, President Nelson Mandela praised the nation's "miracle" but said there were no short cuts to the new and fairer society. He called for hard work to rectify apartheid's legacy of racial inequality. In a gesture symbolising the peaceful transition from oppressive white minority rule to multiracial democracy, Mandela, in an address from the steps of the Union Buildings in Pretoria where he was inaugurated, announced a remission of jail terms for those charged before 6th December, 1993 with possessing weapons for political motives. A crowd of 10,000 danced and sang while he spoke. In Cape Town,
former president F W de Klerk called for people to put the past behind them and see South Africa go on to fulfil its real potential. The need for this was underlined in Kwazulu-Natal, where 1,000 Inkatha supporters of Chief Buthelezi blocked a main road to protest the slow pace of land redistribution. And the white racist Afrikaner Volksfront registered its anniversary feelings by flying the Boer flag at half-mast from its Pretoria offices.
