The earliest written records of Xing Yi (心意拳)can be traced to the 18th century, and are attributed to Ma Xueli of Henan Province and Dai Long Bang of Shanxi Province. Legend credits the creation of Xing Yi to renowned Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) general Yue Fei.
Yue Fei (Chinese: 岳飞; March 24, 1103 – January 28, 1142) was a Chinese military general who lived during the Southern Song dynasty and considered a national hero of China, known for leading Southern Song forces in the wars in the 12th century between Southern Song and the Jurchen-ruled Jin dynasty in northern China. Because of his warlike stance, he was put to death by the Southern Song government in 1142 under a concocted charge, after a negotiated peace was achieved with the Jurchens. Widely seen as a patriot and national folk hero in China, since his death Yue Fei has evolved into a paragon of loyalty in Chinese culture.
According to the book Henan Orthodox Xingyi Quan, Dai Long Bang (戴龙邦) wrote the Preface to Six Harmonies Boxing in the 15th reign year of the Qianlong Emperor [1750]. Inside it says, '...when Yue Fei was a child, he received special instructions from Zhou Tong. Extremely skilled in spearfighting, he used the spear to create fist techniques and established a skill called Yi Quan' (意拳). Meticulous and unfathomable, this technique far outstripped ancient ones."
According to legend, throughout the Jin, Yuan and Ming Dynasties few individuals had studied this art, one of them being Ji Longfeng of Shanxi Province. After Yue Fei's death, the art was 'lost' for half a millennium. Then, during the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Shaanxi Province's Zhongnan Mountains, Yue Fei's boxing manual was said to have been discovered by Ji. It is more likely though that Ji had created the art based on prior martial arts experience, or passed on an art that had already existed. This martial art later is known as Xinyi quan and being inherited in few areas in China.

Dai's Xinyiquan, also known as Xinyiquan or Xinyi Liuhe Quan, is one of the most outstanding internal martial arts in the Chinese martial arts. For hundreds of years, this boxing has been kept secret within the Dai family in Qixian, Shanxi province. It has a long history, rich content, and mysterious and unfathomable techniques, combining the theories and techniques of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, making it a scientific martial art that focuses on both internal and external training. The techniques follow the objective rules of nature, based on the theory of the balance of yin and yang of heaven and earth, and the theory of the five elements of gold, wood, water, fire, and earth, which are the essence of Dai's Xinyiquan. Dai's Xinyiquan is one of the three famous internal martial arts (Tai Chi, Bagua, Xingyi), and is the ancestor of Xingyi Quan. Internally, it emphasizes the harmony of heart and intention, intention and Qi, and Qi and strength (these are the internal three harmonies), while externally, it emphasizes the unity of hands and feet, elbows and knees, and shoulders and hips (these are the external three harmonies). Therefore, people also call Dai's Xinyiquan the Xinyi Liuhe Quan, or Xinyiquan of the Six Harmonies.
