The collector's dream watch: The A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1

Описание: It took over five decades for the renowned German company A. Lange & Söhne to fully recover after the conflicts of the 20th century nearly destroyed it. The living great-grandson of Ferdinand Adolph Lange sought out to Günter Blümlein, who had done excellent work with IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre, and assisted him in reviving the family business. Exact 145 years later, Walter Lange established the new business; it took them another four years to introduce their first new collection. The Lange 1 was in addition to the Arkade, Saxon, and Tourbillon Pour le Mérite. It was intended to stand for the pinnacle of German watchmaking, paying homage to the brand's history while also anticipating more cutting-edge design options.

The Grand Lange 1 was developed as a larger alternative to the original 38.5mm casing in later years when it was realised that the catalogue needed a larger watch. Even if it somewhat filled the void, watchmaking takes years to perfect. A. Lange & Söhne introduced the calibre L095.1 in 2012 to address the dial arrangement that resulted from employing the same movement as the Lange 1 in a larger case.

The most recent Grand Lange 1 employs the same L095.1 as the one that was unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2022 last year, but manages to reduce the size of the watch to just 8.2mm tall. That greatly improves the wearing experience for a 41mm watch without reducing the desired wrist presence. The deconstructed dial is expertly organised, using the golden ratio's geometrical principles to organise its arrangement rather than spreading intricacies at random. With its designated subdials and large opera-style date window that can be adjusted with a pusher on the left side, it is very simple to read.
