Benefits of using a custom template include (but are not limited to)
Tracks are already named
You can pre mix some of your sounds
Have your favourite/ most used plugins/keygroups already loaded
Already have effects on your return channels
Great if midi controller is mapped
Following a set formula for making beats, dramatically increased my workflow. With or without a template I still put the same instruments on the same tracks and the same drum sounds on the same pads. Muscle memory is a powerful thing!
Using a template is supposed to help not hinder you.
If you find it stifles your creativity or originality, then consider making changes to it every so often.
And remember, the more you add to the template, the longer it takes to load it up, so don't overdo it!
