Hanseatic City Elburg is one of the most striking fortified towns in the Netherlands. Located by the Veluwemeer lake (former sea: Zuiderzee), the town is world-renowned for its unique medieval street plan and rich maritime history.
Medieval Fortification & Hanseatic History
Grid Street Plan: Between 1392 and 1396, Elburg was completely rebuilt according to a rectangular grid. This unique design, based on the 'golden ratio', remains perfectly preserved in the city center today.
Hanseatic Past: Elburg has been an official Hanseatic City since 1367. As a member of this powerful trade network, the city flourished through commerce across the Zuiderzee.
The Vischpoort: The only remaining city gate of the original fortifications. It later served as a lighthouse to guide fishermen safely into the harbor.
Sights & Museums
Museum Elburg: Located in the 15th-century Agnietenconvent. Here, you can discover the town's history through themes like 'City with a Plan' and 'City by the Water'.
National Organ Museum: Housed in the former city castle (Arent thoe Boecophuis), this museum showcases the rich organ culture of the Netherlands.
Museum Sjoel Elburg: A moving museum dedicated to Jewish life in a Dutch provincial town.
The Botters: The harbor is still home to traditional wooden fishing boats (botters), keeping the memory of the pre-Afsluitdijk era alive.
