PROGRESS: 1907 Henry & Lindeman Grand Piano Refinishing

We’re currently in the middle of a full piano rebuild refinishing on this 1907 Henry & S.G. Lindeman grand piano. This one came from a nearby client who has a strong sentimental attachment to it—it’s been in the family for generations. That’s something we see a lot here at the shop, and it’s always meaningful to be part of that process of bringing a family heirloom back to life.

In this video, I walk through some of the work we’ve completed so far. We’ve stripped most of the case, including the legs, lid, and lyre, and we’re well into the repair and prep stage. You’ll notice a kind of “chicken wire” pattern showing through the veneer in spots—that’s just the laser etching from our stripping equipment, and it’ll be cleaned up completely by the time we move into the finishing phase.

You’ll also see our tech working with walnut wood filler to smooth out all the gouges and blemishes—painstaking work, but absolutely necessary to get the surface ready for a clean, professional finish. We’ve also got some structural work going on, like repairing a torn-out hinge on the rim.

Once everything’s smoothed, sealed, and polished—including all the brass pieces—this 100-year-old Lindeman is going to look gorgeous. If you’ve got a family piano you’re considering restoring, whether for sentimental or musical reasons, we’d love to help.
