Well, that's precisely what happened to the castle I'll be showing today, Château de Bagnac.
Built on the old site of a 15th-century castle this reconstruction project started in 1858 by the Marquis and Marquise de Saint-Martin de Bagnac.

The castle took decades to finish. They even had to stop in 1870 because of the Franco-Prussian War. All the plans for this French chateau were done by the Marquis and Marquise, who were inspired by none other than Eugène Viollet-le-Duc: the architect famously known for restoration projects such as Notre-Dame of Paris, Mont-Saint Michel, and Carcassonne.
Neo-Gothic in style, the castle was dominated by corbelled turrets, pinnacles, and crenelated watchtowers. On the inside, it's worth mentioning the two magnificent fireplaces.
It was officially added to the list of Historical Monuments of France in May 1975, meaning no one can demolish it.
While its future remains uncertain, the castle lies there, left to crumble, forgotten by time and slowly being reclaimed by nature.

This castle is now closed off to the public. It's too dangerous and stands at imminent risk of collapsing. This video is in no way, shape, or form an invitation to visit the castle. The sole purpose of this episode is to tell French history and to bring light to another abandoned Historical Monument in France.
