The Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (English: Los Angeles-class submarine, often referred to as the 688 class) is a high-speed multi-purpose nuclear submarine built by the United States during the Cold War, and it is also the fifth generation of American attack submarines. The ship's tasks are mainly anti-ship, anti-submarine, and escort for the aircraft carrier battle group. The USS Los Angeles, the first of the Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarines, was completed and commissioned in November 1976. By 1996, a total of 62 ships had been built, making it the largest number of nuclear submarines ever built by the U.S. Navy, all of which were built by Newport News. Jointly built by the company and General Dynamics Electric Boat Company, as of 2020, 34 ships have been retired and 28 are still in service
