The calf blinks, adjusting to the brightness. Its ears twitch. Its long legs, awkward and unfamiliar, attempt to respond to the ancient command written into every elephant’s being: stand up. The legs bend too quickly, folding beneath the small body. The mother nudges again — more firmly this time. Encouraging. Teaching. Supporting.
Slowly, with visible effort, the calf pushes its front legs underneath its body. Muscles tremble. Balance wavers. The umbilical cord sways gently as the newborn struggles against gravity.
