I started off with a small 2 x 6 wooden coop for my small flock. Each evening, they would go inside and roost. But I wanted them to have more space to run when they were outside the coop. So I purchased a 6 x10 metal framed run/pen and placed the coop inside it. My chickens began using the coop as a combination roost nesting box, sitting nonstop at night and going inside only to lay. Each morning the little coop would be covered with poop! 😫💩
So I removed the coop and placed a roost ladder in the pen. I use Chicks Dig It Premium Sand. It cleans up nicely. I also put down Sweet PDZ directly under the roost ladder along with a little food-grade DE. My next project is to cover the pen with a roof.
