There are two theories for why: Some experts argue that a woman’s male friends are often her back-up mates; she might love her boyfriend but if something happens to him, she has some great guys she already knows who she can potentially replace him with. And since women generally prefer athletic mates, it makes sense under this theory that they’d want athletic guy friends as well, since these are her back-up mates.
But another theory is that male friends partially function as her bodyguards; men are dangerous, and so it makes sense that you’d want strong ones on your side. And frankly, I prefer this theory, because heterosexual men also prefer male friends who are physically competent, and so this theory potentially explains why men and women both prefer to have strong men in life. Having tough guys on your side makes sense whether or not you want to mate with them.
