Our colleague was asked this question on his Technical interview:

When LNG from different sources with different densities are mixed during a bunkering operation when new LNG is sent into the tank or during loading of LNG cargo, the LNG with the higher density (typically lower temperature) would settle at the bottom and with the lighter density – on top.

If the tank remains relatively stationary (no sloshing or mixing takes place) heating of the lower part of the tank will decrease its density and increase its vapor pressure, but the hydrostatic pressure of the LNG on top will keep gas from boiling off.

If the density difference becomes too large or the tank is disturbed so rapid mixing occurs, the LNG with higher vapor pressure at the bottom will rise up and encounter the lower pressure at the top of the tank.

❗ This is called rollover. Cosequences?

It can lead to rapid boil-off and generation of large amounts of vapor in extreme cases. This could lead to a large gas release through the pressure relief valves. [MARVS]
