Mondo grass can be invasive to established lawns and very difficult to get rid of. This video experiments using Roundup (active ingredient Glyphosate) applied with a sponge to selectively target and kill mondo grass that has spread and taken over areas of the lawn while trying to best preserve the St. Augustine grass.
After three applications over winter and into spring, though a majority of the mondo grass was dead, there was still some that remained. This speaks to the resiliency and strength of the mondo grass -- it is not easy to kill.
Alternate approaches to killing mondo grass include the use of glyphosate, covering with black plastic sheeting for weeks, and ultimately digging it out.
The first two applications were applied with Roundup Poison Ivy Plus Tough Brush Killer. The third application included the use of a surfactant, Southern Ag Surfactant for Herbicides.
