In the spring of 1897, a man walked back into a town he had vanished from three years earlier.
He arrived on foot, just after dawn, wearing clothes that didn't belong to him. His face was weathered beyond his years. His hands trembled when he tried to speak. And when the sheriff asked him where he'd been, he said only one thing:
"Don't look for the others."
His name was Thomas Gradle. He was twenty-eight years old. And according to every record available—census documents, church registries, testimonies given under oath—he had disappeared without a trace on the night of October 14th, 1894, along with six other people from the mining settlement of Ashford Bend, located in the remote highlands of eastern Oregon.
