Safieta "Sawadogo Nouaga" is a model of a successful food for peace project designed to build resilience to shocks, the project was funded by USAID over five years ago and implemented by the Catholic Relief Service and its field partners. The assistance concluded over two years ago.
Families in the Sahel are living on the edge of survival; a shock can easily send a family or community into crisis. For many women throughout the Sahel living on small farms or raising livestock is their primary means of survival, however if there isn't rain it usually means that the family will not have food or any means to live. Years of repeated drought means they stocking any reserves is almost impossible. Between seven and ten million people are at risk of during droughts and hunger season.
Today, even after two years of the programs conclusion, Sawadogo Nouaga is continuing to prosper on the proceeds from their dry season market gardens, and off season stocks.
