George Michell explains the iconography and symbolic significance of Calukyan temples. These temples are situated in Badami and other towns from where successive Calukyas ruled. Michell explains how the architecture in these temples is a confluence of Jain, Buddhist and Dravidian influences. Interestingly, Michell points to the use of Sanskrit and Kalidasa. These temples, in the historic town of Badami in Karnataka, are dedicated to Siva, the linga, Vishnu as Narasimha and Durga.
