What does it mean to have squamous epithelial cells in the urine? Now we have to understand what squamous epithelial cells are and why they are present in the urine. Generally, when we pass urine, urine passes through the urinary tract, which will have lining of epithelial cells. So when you have too many squamous epithelial cells in the urine, that means the sample collection is not adequate. So whenever we look at the urine sample, we'll see the number of squamous epithelial cells in the urine to determine the adequacy of the urine sample collected. So whenever you are giving a urine sample, it's always preferable to give a mid-stream sample. So what do you mean by mid-stream sample? Generally, wash the area where you pass the urine with water—no soap, only plain water—and then you discard the first two to three seconds of urine and then start collecting the urine sample. This is called a midstream sample.
