This simple fid, for 5/16 to 1/2" line, can be fabricated from the 'white' section of any dead Sharpie permeant marker. Once installed, this technique lets you turn any winch line extension into an industry standard Whoopie Sling that can be adjusted to any length you might need in the field. Instead of picking a fixed adjustment length for a traditional whoopie sling, it can be re-made in the field to more efficiently use the available line length. Generally speaking, this means with a 100' extension, you could have something as short as 5', as long as 100', or anywhere in-between. It takes about a minute to re-make the bury and loop at any position along the line.

The ability to adjust the length of your extension comes in very handy for a multitude of uses such as holding your vehicle in one direction while winching in another. Have you ever had your winch extension be not the best length. Now, you can use this for progress capture by adjusting the length to hold your position. It means you don't have too reel in your winch line if your extension was too long before, you just adjust or re-make it to whatever length you need. This is such a simple change to long established techniques. It doesn't really cost anything, but adds a huge amount of flexibility to your rigging.
