With icy roads posing a threat, a Brentwood driving instructor is sharing tips on how to stay safe if you must drive.
Jeremy Lyon, owner of Brentwood Driver Training, emphasizes the importance of knowing how to drive on ice and snow. "First you decide that you're going to drive really slowly," said Lyon.
Lyon allowed FOX 17 News to ride-along with him as he demonstrated how slow you have to drive and how far apart you have to be from the other driver.
"Icy pavement or snowy, you would want to be about this far. That's about five or six, seven seconds behind that car," said Lyon.
Essential workers have to get on the roads and people might venture out in case of an emergency.

"When the snow and ice starts falling, it helps it. Not stick as quickly or last as long so it helps us get on the roadway so we can start plowing," said Erin Zeigler, spokesperson for TDOT.
However, driving on ICE can still cause accidents.
Lyons showed us what you can do if you drive and skid.
"You start to skid, you release the gas," he said. "You put your shifter down to one below it, you'll slow the car down on its own without hitting the brake, and then you can just squeeze the brake to a stop on the ice or snow."
But what happens if you start to slide in a tight two way lane?
"You would want to slide to the side of the road, so you don't have a head-on collision for sure," said Lyon.
There are ditches sometimes on the side of roads.
Lyon advises to take routes with more space to drive like interstates instead of tight two lane roads.
"Also, on the sides, if there's cars, you don't want to be in between two trucks or cars if you don't have to," said Lyon.
If stuck in snow, Lyon advises using a carpet or cardboard under the spinning tire.
His school also offers simulators to teach what to do and what not to do such as speeding in bad conditions.
