Описание: Cuba as a country is simply amazing. Stunning. Fabulous. The nature, the people, it's a very unusual and different place, but really - it's so safe and the people are always welcoming, regardless of hardships.

Discover the problem of Cuban electricity. Lengthy entire city blackouts, lasting all day or night sometimes, and with power going out multiple times each week for hours. This makes life challenging. Like running a busy nightclub, or a restaurant, or a cake shop.

I was welcomed into several Cuban homes, who treated me as family, sharing delightful Cuban customs and meals, and showing many areas of authentic Cuban life.

I found myself attending a gay wedding. I never knew I would be attending a gay wedding in Cuba, but there it was - full of really friendly local people. The Groom and Groom looked stunning in white, and there was much dancing. Wedding food was rice and beans - you can't get more Cuban than that, but as usual.. they found a way to make it very tasty. Mojito cocktails served too.

The authorities can be harsh. Police took a passenger off a bus because they had more than the allowed quota of 'beans'. Which is very small. Perhaps they were going to sell them, and were using the bus to smuggle the (quite small) quantity of beans. Or perhaps they were just bringing some beans home to their family. Who would know, but the beans appeared to have been confiscated by the police, who are (sadly) on very low salaries themselves. Perhaps the Police were 'hungry' too - many are in Cuba.. yet all seem still happy and smiling. It's a wonderful place.

I was given a different shirt to wear, as my contact told me it wasn't good to have westerners on the bus. She said I had to hide and not engage with the bus staff. She said they might object to me being there, so I was in a way being smuggled on board the local bus it seemed. Even still I had to pay vastly more than the usual price, due to the severe gas shortage. The payment could almost be considered as a bribe, except I saw everyone else paying the same rates in cash to the conductor, and on the long ride - we saw very few other cars and trucks on the highway. Because there was almost no fuel available for weeks, and our bus was only there because passengers were all paying 10x the usual fare to 'buy the gas' for the long trip. Cuba is .. interesting and different. There are many challenges, but it's well worth the journey if you are brave going into the unknown.

There was an opportunity to tour the local district communist headquarters, with pictures of Fidel Castro on the walls, and shrines to other Cuban leaders in the roads outside. Religious like icons.

There was also dancing. Dancing in the facilities of the local district communist party HQ, with a live band.

There was also the 'It's Too Much' restaurant and bar. Saucy and exciting. Good to see Cuba starting to open up to some diversity and flavour, where such a place can be an adventure and not just a place 'to eat', surrounded by meagre furnishings. This place had a great vibe, good staff and good Cuban food. Unusual theme for Cuba, but highly recommended.
