Milder & Dry Then New Mexico Temperatures in 80s in 90s 3-16-2026

Morning Meteorologist Ryan DePhillips has a look at the weather ahead. Colder-than-average to around-average morning air is mostly present with mostly calmer winds in wake of yesterday's windy system with still plenty of dry air at the surface despite clouds present. Air temperatures in the north and east are starting off mostly from around the upper single digits to the 20s, except for parts of the Four Corners in the lower 30s, while elsewhere to the southwest, air temperatures are mostly ranging from the 20s to the lower 40s. Mild afternoon air, mostly above average for this time of the year, will be in store today with partly to mostly sunny skies. Many areas from East New Mexico to the Pecos River Valley area will be colder than average though, while ranging from the 40s to 50s from northeast to southwest from high to low elevation. Meanwhile, west-northwesterly winds aloft that are set to go up, over, and down the east-sloped mountain faces out west, will lead to the mild process at the surface west of the Central Mountains. The northern higher elevations will range from the upper 30s to the low 50s, while the northern valley floors to western and central areas will mostly range from the upper 50s to the low 70s. Somewhat-breezy conditions for some tomorrow morning will mix the air around more, leading to a milder start for northeastern areas. Mostly even warmer air will be in store for the rest of the work-week with some of the highest temperatures of the year so far eventually ahead with records widespread. Fire chances will be elevated to eventually critical once again in the East Plains of New Mexico. Gustier downsloping, compressing winds that will continue to warm the surface air, as a very strong ridge of high pressure aloft will overtake the region from the west.
