An Australian senator pushing a national burqa ban was barred on Tuesday from Parliament for the remainder of the year - seven consecutive Senate sitting days - after entering the chamber wearing the Muslim garment.
Pauline Hanson, 71, leader of the One Nation minor party known for its anti-Muslim, anti-immigration stance, was accused of a disrespectful stunt on Monday when she strode into the Senate cloaked head to toe to protest fellow senators’ refusal to even consider her bill to outlaw the burqa and other full-face coverings in public places.
She was suspended for the rest of Monday.
With no apology forthcoming, senators escalated matters on Tuesday, passing a censure motion that delivered one of the toughest penalties seen against a senator in decades.
