/ @dentcarenepal I presented an oral presentation entitled “The Quad Helix Appliance: An Effective Orthodontic Tool for Maxillary Expansion – A Case-report” at the 24th Annual Dental conference of Nepal Dental Association at Biratnaagar, Nepal. I am presenting the same here.
The quad helix appliance is indicated in collapsed maxillary arch in cleft as well as non-cleft patients, in cases of unilateral and bilateral posterior crossbite, and for derotation and distalization of maxillary molars.
The expansion is done until occlusal aspect of the maxillary lingual cusp contacts the occlusal slope of the mandibular buccal cusp bilaterally in centric relation. Overcorrection of 2-3 mm is recommended to compensate for uprighting of the buccally tipped teeth once retention is discontinued. The appliance is maintained in the expanded but passive position for a 6-week retention period after the adequate expansion is achieved.
