Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai visited Mahama refugee camp in the Eastern Rwanda, home to thousands of Burundian refugees, to highlight the needs of refugees. This was part of her advocacy tour of refugee camps in Africa under the auspices of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) from July 10-13 2016. The visit started in Kenya, where on July 12- which was her 19th birthday- she marked UN-designated Malala Day in Dadaab Somalis refugee camp. Rwanda hosts more than 100,000 Burundian refugees that fled political instability resulting from President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to hold onto power against the will of citizens in April 2015.
