Some Minnesota towns didn’t fade they disappeared. Streets were covered, houses were moved, and entire communities relocated as the land beneath them became more valuable than the town itself. If your family has Minnesota roots, they may have once called one of these places home.
Towns covered:
Elcor — removed for expanding mining
Forestville — bypassed by the railroad
Nininger — once planned as a major city
Taunton — lost when the railroad left
Sparta — built over valuable iron ore
Manhattan Beach — one of the county’s smallest towns
Beaver Falls — declined after losing the county seat
Goodrich — faded after rail service ended
Leaf City — the railroad never came
Normanville — small town that slowly emptied
Forest City — former county seat, later abandoned
Freeborn — town disappeared, name remained
Pitt — station closed and the forest returned
