SAINT-MALO to DINAN by Bike 🏰 Exploring Two English Favourites in Brittany

I spent two nights with Pierre, Émilie & family during which I passed a morning on foot in Saint Malo and an afternoon sheltering and working in the warmth of their beautiful home. They’d rescued me from an overnight with a ‘feels like’ forecast of -6C!

But the weather is improving; today it’s dry and the sun is sort of half out. I rode the lovely wide promenade into Saint Malo’s old town, but just passed through having climbed the stairs up to the walls, and investigated the little islands at low tide without the bike the previous day.

Further around to the west the Port des Sablons is filled with little boats and one giant Brittany ferry; you can go direct to Portsmouth from here. The 1939-1945 memorial museum at fort d’Aleth remains closed until the end of March so I left town following the Eurovelo until it crossed the fjord (can we call it?). From which point the eurovelo went west whereas I continued south to the gorgeous town of Dinan with its 12th century cobbled streets and half timbered houses. I’m not surprised it boasts one of Brittany’s largest populations of English immigrants.

Pushing Gibbo up the steep Rue Du Jerzual two seperate men helpfully suggested I just mount the bike and ride up. They had assumed it was an electric bike. Rude!

Just outside of Dinan Warm Showers host Régis Delanoë greeted me with homemade galettes and crêpes, plus local cider. An author, he has written a book of his trip biketouring Brittany following the Tour De France routes. I regret being unable to comprehend more than a brief scan through would allow, but it looks like a great read.
