Navras (or Navarasa) refers to the nine fundamental emotions or sentiments in Indian classical arts, aesthetics, and literature, as defined in the ancient Natya Shastra by Rishi Bharat Muni. These emotions—love, mirth, compassion, anger, heroism, fear, disgust, wonder, and peace—are used to express human experiences in dance, music, and theatre.
The nine Navrasa (emotions) are:
Shringara (Love/Beauty): The sentiment of romance and attraction.
Hasya (Joy/Laughter): The emotion of mirth and humor.
Karuna (Sorrow/Compassion): The expression of empathy and mercy.
Raudra (Anger/Fury): The sentiment of rage and intense emotion.
Veera (Heroism/Courage): The emotion of bravery and strength.
Bhayanaka (Terror/Fear): The sentiment of fear and horror.
Bibhatsa (Disgust/Aversion): The expression of repulsion.
Adbhutha (Wonder/Amazement): The sentiment of surprise.
Shantha (Peace/Tranquility): The emotion of serenity and calmness.
These rasas are fundamental to classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Kathak for storytelling and conveying deep, nuanced emotions to the audience. The term literally breaks down to Nav (nine) and Ras (essence/taste).
