We see in this video the difference between pink sapphire and a pink ruby. Both are same material which is corundum, just different trace elements or different quantities of these trace elements make the different in appearance.
The dominant color for a pink sapphire has to be Pink, while the dominant color for ruby has to be Red.
Pink sapphires can be Reddish PINK, or Purplish PINK or Orangish pink (in some cases it will be classified as Padparadscha), the main color has to be PINK.
Ruby can be Pinkish RED, Purplish RED, Orangish RED, the main color has to be RED.
The higher the chromium the more red the stone will be. Chromium is a trace element in sapphires with gives the red color.
This video is not a replacement for laboratory grading but just to give you an idea of the different between them. Even 2 different laboratories can have separate results based on their grading criteria.
