Aburi is a town in the Akuapim South Municipal District of the Eastern Region of south Ghana famous for the Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Odwira festival. Aburi has a population of 18,701 people as of 2013. Right in the town of Aburi is where you can find the beautiful Aburi gardens
The garden occupies an area of 64.8 hectares. It was opened in March, 1890 and was founded by Governor William Brandford-Griffith and Dr John Farrell Easmon, a Sierra Leonean medical doctor. Before the garden was established, it was the site of a sanatorium built in 1875 for Gold Coast government officials.
The cool mountainous weather of Aburi makes it a destination for people who love the cool side of life. Located in this cool tranquil environment is the Aburi Botanical Gardens. The garden covers a total land area of about one hundred and sixty (160) acres. However it is only three (3) acres that have been developed and the remaining serving as a botanical reserve.
The site is used for multi purpose functions such as weddings, picnics, holidays destinations, tourism and a whole lots of activities. An hour north from Accra, this is a great space to relax and take a picnic. Beautiful plants and trees and fabulous photo opportunities. Take time to cover all inches of the garden.
The Aburi Botanic Gardens in spite of its critical role it is playing is facing some challenges including but not limited to: encroachment, inadequate budgetary allocation, Research, and Instability.
