This Calculus 1 video explains how to use logarithmic differentiation to find derivatives. There are two main types of derivatives that we focus on in this video.
Type 1 (logarithmic differentiation fractions) is when we have a rational expression, with a complex combination of product, quotient, and chain rules. Logarithmic differentiation allows us a shorter process to break up this complex formula using properties of logs. We then use implicit differentiation, with replacement.
Type 2 is when we have a variable in both the base and the exponent of what we are trying to differentiate. We provide an outline of the process for logarithmic differentiation, since most of the time its uses are quite similar.
