Seven. She was just seven when she was married off to a man who was almost ten years older. Nineteen. Pratima Devi was a mother to three children by the time she turned 19. With an abusive alcoholic husband and three children to take care of she struggled to earn a living to support her offspring while the sorry excuse of a husband drank away and beat her almost daily. She eventually escaped his clutches and came to Delhi, where she has been for the past thirty years.
Her children are all grown up and live in her village, and her son wished to take her back there to care for her better. But she can't leave. Not yet. She can't leave her family of 300+ dogs that she's come to love and adore.
Even as a child she'd been fascinated with dogs and has fond memories of playing with puppies in her neighbourhood. When she moved to Delhi, she started helping any and every dog she found on the street. Her family consisted of 2 street dogs but over time it has turned into an army of fluffy love.
She blames the people who buy dogs to show off and often just cast them aside like trash the moment the dogs get sick. She gladly takes in dogs regardless whether it'll ill or disfigured or old. People in the vicinity and the city, support her cause every now and then by giving her food items and money. And she needs all the help she can get. Her wages as a rag picker are barely enough for her to survive and yet she would gladly sacrifice all that just so that her dogs can live more comfortable lives.
The "Dog Lady of Delhi" is a shining example of what it truly means to be human. At 62 years of age, she doesn't have many worries but knows that her time in this world is limited and hopes that she can find a successor before it's too late. So, if you're in need of a furry friend, give her a visit and take a look at her dogs. Even giving one of them a home will go a long way (Or you can simply donate food or money or clothing or anything for that matter).
