Trading Options UK: What Brokers Actually Sell You (Hint: Not Options)

You Google "options trading UK," click the first three results, and land on IG, City Index, Plus500. Big headers — "Options Trading," "Trade Options Today." Here's the catch. What they're selling is not a listed option. It's a CFD structured to mimic an option payoff — a derivative on a derivative. IG calls them knockouts. Citi issues turbo warrants. None of these are exchange-listed contracts. None clear through a clearinghouse. The counterparty is the broker, and the spread embeds the margin.
Why does the UK retail market look like this? One specific document — the FCA's Policy Statement PS19/18, in force since 2018. It banned binary options sale to retail, capped CFD leverage at 30:1 on FX majors and 20:1 on major indices, and forced brokers to publish loss-rate disclosures on every CFD page. The number behind it: ESMA's 2018 baseline showed 74–89% of retail CFD accounts losing money across the EEA. By that point, UK retail brokers had already built their businesses around ISAs, SIPPs, GIA equity wrappers — options were never a retail flagship.
Three products get labelled "options" in the UK. They are not interchangeable. Listed equity and index options — the real product, standardised contracts on CBOE, Nasdaq, Eurex, ICE Futures Europe, centrally cleared. CFD-wrapped options — IG knockouts, SocGen turbos, Citi leveraged certificates — private contracts with the broker, no secondary market, opaque pricing. And spread bets — the UK and Ireland specialty, structured so HMRC's BIM22020 rule treats them as gambling, not trading.
If you want real listed options as UK retail, the broker list is short. Interactive Brokers UK (broadest menu, US/EU/HK/SG listings, ~$0.65 per US contract). Saxo (strong European/Eurex focus, better options visualisation). Charles Schwab UK (US-only). tastytrade (US-focused specialist). All four require an appropriateness test before they let you near options. The FCA mandates it — it's not a formality.
Tax matters more than the wrapper choice. The CGT annual allowance collapsed from £12,300 in 2022/23 to £3,000 from 2024/25. Listed options and CFDs are CGT-eligible above £3,000 — 10% basic rate, 20% higher. Spread bets are tax-free under HMRC BIM22020 — losses not deductible. For long-term equity exposure, a Stocks & Shares ISA at £20,000 annual still beats every options strategy on tax. Options solve different problems — hedging, income generation, defined-risk directional, volatility trades.
