Nicola Fazio, MD, PhD, Istituto Europeo di Oncologia, Milan, Italy, comments on the clinical significance and prognostic impact of carcinoid heart disease (CHD) in patients with small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NET) and carcinoid syndrome (CS). Based on a study across two NET referral centers, CHD was present in approximately a quarter of patients. Key diagnostic markers include elevated urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels, supporting early echocardiogram screening. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
