Restoring jammed antique lock and making a new key

As usual I started my project with disassembly of the lock. This was a very simple disassembly. I was very curious to see how the mechanism was build and I was surprised by how simple the mechanism was. At that point it also became obvious that the key was not original key but most likely the seller had lot of old keys and tried them all and found this was working and then the lock was forgotten somewhere for years and it got rusty. After the disassembly the parts were put into rust remover.

I chose not to polish the parts because I thought this sort of bluing would nook more like what the lock has looked like when it was new.

I also wanted to make anew key because the key I got wasn't a perfect fit and it seemed like a fun challenge. I took a bolt which was roughly the same thickness the original key had been then I filed a simple ornament on the bolt to make the key look older. I made the ring for the key from nails.I probably have to make special episode about all the times I use nails as something other than a nail. Then I used a dremel to shape the key to fit the lock. This was easy as there was only one of these "pins". I wouldn't want to have the lock on my front door as it seems you can open it with keys that are pretty far from the original one. Also making a new key wouln't be hard if you have any idea what's inside the lock. It only stops burglars from walking straight in.

The key I made, looked "wrong". It was too shiny and smooth so I forced some patina on it. I achieved this with electrolysis. The process I used is electrolytic rust removal but on the steel rod instead of the key. This causes the key to corrode so it looks like pitting from rust. After maybe and hour or a bit more I already had nice patina. After the key was finished all the parts were blued with gun blue and oiled to get prevent it from rusting again. The bluing is for both rust protection and aesthetic purposes.
