'Ashtaleela'
A Solo Bharatanatyam performance exploring the Ashtanayikas - the eight romantic archetypes of a woman in love. Set in a magical moonlit autumn night on the banks of the Yamuna, the story amplifies the metaphor of the divine Raas of the Gopikas with their Krishna.
The prime philosophy of all classical dances of India is the Jeevatma yearning to unite with the Paramatma; the microcosm seeking the macrocosm. The nayika (heroine) depicts a woman who longs to unite with her beloved, that Supreme Soul.
There are various classifications of heroines enumerated by the great sage Bharat muni in his Natyashastra- an ancient treatise on dramaturgy. Out of which the 8 nayikas classified on the basis of their avasthaas (conditions) in Love are known as the ‘Ashtanayikas’.
